Elaine Searle's Autumn Painting Holidays
Each week includes a full day excursion with lunch included and time to do some shopping!
Excursion Week 1 - This week we visit the charming hill village of Spello with its winding cobbled streets. A classic Umbrian hill town steeped in art and culture with renowned churches rich with frescoes. A great opprtunity to wander the winding lanes and visit small art galleries, specialist food shops and do some retail therapy! For those who want to stretch their legs, you can follow a flat trail through gorgeous olive groves alongside an almost intact Roman Aqueduct. Lunch is in a traditional restaurant in a small hamlet nearby.
Excursion Week 2 - After a cappucino in the beautiful main square of Montefalco you can take a short stroll around this beautiful town with breathtaking views across the valleys. Following some time for shopping (the speciality of the town is linen and fabrics), we visit the Romanelli vineyard where the family serve a homemade lunch prepared entriely from organic produce made and grown by the Romanelli family. The lunch is accompanied by a tasting of their award winning organic wines and olive oils.
Note: those not wishing to go on the excursion will have full use of the studio and a 2 course lunch at the hotel.

These can be arranged direct with Kevin Hendry, the event co-ordinator at Il Collaccio. For more information and to arrange your transfer please contact Kevin at: email@example.com
The nearest airports are:
Ancona 1hr, 45 minutes
Rome 2hr, 15 minutes
The nearest railway station is:

What painting materials do I need to bring with me?
You need to bring your own*:
Watercolour brushes (I recommend good sables with sharp points, medium (4) small (1 & 000 sizes). One cheap nylon or an older worn out sable brush just for mixing is useful.
Watercolour paints (I recommend artists quality) either in pan or tube form.
Hot Pressed Watercolour paper, 140lb (I use Fabriano 5 but Arches is also good)
A few small sheets of thin tracing paper
HB and 2B pencils plus sharpener
Plastic rule marked in metric or imperial
Artists masking tape
Plastic eraser and a kneadable eraser
Mixing palette (with several wells)
*if you are new to this form of painting and would like a suggestion of paint colours to bring please contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Provided in the studio are:
Painting Boards (A3 size) and wooden blocks for support
Rolls of paper towels
Other: there are free tea and coffee making facilities in the studio but not in the rooms. If you would like to make a hot drink in your room we recommend you bring a small travel kettle with you.
What else do I need to bring with me?
A pair of sturdy flat-soled shoes or trainers. Walking boots if you plan to walk a lot otherwise trainers will do. Sun cream and insect repellent (not a major problem but advisable as it is not available on site). There are hairdryers in the rooms.
What will the weather be like?
Obviously, we can’t guarantee the weather but if it’s fine then expect warm or hot sunny days with pleasantly cooler evenings. We are at 600 meters so there is low humidity most of the time.
Will the swimming pools be open?
Yes. The pool is open from 9am to 6pm. An early morning swim is possible though. Please note that you are required by law to wear a swimming cap in the pool. These can be purchased at reception for a small fee.
What clothes should I bring?
Late May/early June and early September should be sunny and warm but can occasionally be inclement and may be quite cool in early mornings and evenings as the hotel is at 600 meters. Come prepared. A cardigan or fleece and a light rain jacket is recommended. The hotel is informal and smart casual clothes will be acceptable. If you like to swim, there are two outdoor but unheated pools. You may take the towels from your bathroom for pool use and these will be replaced.
Is Il Collaccio suitable for people with walking difficulties?
Generally, yes. The studio is on the ground floor and there are two rooms on the ground floor of the hotel. There is a walk of about 100 meters with a gentle incline from the studio and hotel to the restaurant.
What can my partner do?
Besides lazing by the pool or enjoying the other on-site facilities your partner can explore the local area (we provide free maps and local information). Your own car is essential to do this. There are various other interesting local activities (see our website www.ilcollaccio.com for more information). Partners are also welcome to join the group on the optional day out.
Can I walk nearby?
Yes. There are 4 or 5 walks of varying duration and difficulty from Il Collaccio. The area is generally quite hilly. Walks are not accompanied by a guide but are well marked and free maps with directions are available from reception. For the serious walkers, there are countless other walking opportunities within the national park.
What can we do on our free day?
Included in the cost of your holiday is an excursion on the free day (please see www.paintbotanical.com for full details). Each week the venue is different. Of course, you can opt out to continue painting in the studio or relax for the day at Il Collaccio. Or you can explore independently by car should you choose to hire one on arrival at the airport/rail station.
Can I use the studio anytime?
Yes. You can also leave your painting materials in the studio all the time.
Can I pay by credit card?
You can pay for your room and most services by credit card. Bar bills and optional days out are cash euros only.
What other activities are there at Il Collaccio and nearby?
Besides exploring the local villages and the food shops of Norcia, nearby activities include walking, river rafting, horse riding and mountain biking. We can organise all these activities for you at reception or in advance.
Is the restaurant close to the studio?
It’s about 100 metres on a white road with a small, gradual incline (and spectacular views!).
What’s the food like?
Breakfast is simple as is the Italian tradition with fruit juice, coffee/tea, croissant, bread and jam and cereals.
Lunch is a cold and hot buffet on the terrace with a selection of delicious local dishes and salads.
Dinner is classic Umbrian cuisine with a starter, then pasta or fish or meat followed by desert (see our website to view the standard restaurant menu and the type of dishes served.) The area is famous for its black truffles, prosciutto, salami, wild boar, sausages, river trout, sheep’s cheese and lentils.
Do you cater for Vegetarians and special dietary needs?
Yes. Please advise us when you book.
Is there an internet connection and mobile phone reception?
Yes. A wi-fi internet connection is available on a pay as you go basis. There is also a public computer for guests use. Mobile reception should be possible but there are also phones in the bedrooms and public phones near reception.
Is there a shop at Il Collaccio?
Yes there is a small shop selling drinks, snacks and some basic toiletries.
